Jose Peña Sosa, 64, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away on Nov. 27, 2016.
He was born in San Angelo, on Nov. 14, 1952. Jose graduated from Central High School and received a degree from Angelo State University and was commissioned to the United States Air Force from ASU’s ROTC. He also received master’s degrees from Sul Ross University and Webster University.
Jose was married to Delia Gutierrez Sosa on Aug. 16, 1975.
After 30 years of service, Jose retired from the United States Air Force as a colonel in Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas. After active duty retirement, he continued working at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, with Homeland Security and then became the emergency manager for Medical Command (MEDCOM).
While serving in the Air Force, Col. Sosa was a part of the Joint Command Staff at CENTCOM during Operation Iraqi Freedom and the War in Afghanistan. While with the Joint Command Staff at CENTCOM, he worked directly with the generals overseeing each of America’s military branches.
Jose was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America, the Knights of Columbus and Little League Baseball, and supported the Carmelite Order in San Antonio, Texas. Jose loved to fly fish, and could often be found on Texas’s lakes and rivers.
He is survived by his parents, Gonzalo and Tomasa Rios Sr., and father- and mother in-law, Jesus and Eva Gutierrez Jr. He is survived by his daughter and son in-law Katherine and Joe Michael Cano, along with his only grandson, Joe Michael Cano Jr. “JC.” Also surviving Jose is his son Jason Sosa, Ph.D., Esq.
Jose will be missed by his surviving brothers Salvador Sosa, Gonzalo P. Rios Jr.(Connie), Phillip Rios (Cindy) and sister Elva Duron (Danny) and several nieces and nephews whom he loved.
A rosary was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, in the chapel of Johnson’s Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial followingin Johnson’s Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
